AI and Designing for Student Choice
Use AI to design student choice that does not fragment your curriculum or your sanity.
The "voice and choice" move that keeps revealing the choosing patterns kids already had. By the end of the workshop, you have a choice design built on the version of UDL that actually works in a real classroom: choice boards, stations, and architectures where the structure does the teaching and you are not running three parallel tracks to keep it going.

THE CURRENT
What "voice and choice" usually does in your classroom.
You designed a choice board to give students agency over their final project. Three options, all rigorous, all aligned to the standards. You handed it out, and within a class period you noticed three patterns: the same three kids who always pick the easiest option picked the easiest option; the two who always pick the most ambitious option picked the most ambitious option; and most of the class waited to see what their friends were doing.
The choice board was supposed to teach decision-making. What it actually did was reveal the decisions students were going to make anyway, packaged as agency.
The work this workshop addresses is designing choice architectures where the act of choosing teaches the student something about themselves as a reader.

THE REFRAME
Real UDL, the kind you can actually sustain.
When choice works, the architecture does most of the teaching. The workshop returns to UDL the way the principles were written: variability designed into the task itself from the start. The field has mostly read UDL as "make three versions of everything," which is unsustainable by November. The real principles are upstream of that. You design the work once, with the variability inside it.
AI's default failure on student choice is generating choice menus. Lists of parallel options, fluent, plausible, varied on the surface and identical underneath. The kind of choice board that makes the planning easy and the choosing inert.
What AI can do with your pedagogy underneath is hold the architecture of the choice in view, what each option is asking the student to do, what kind of reader each option grows, and what the student is learning about themselves by choosing. The design happens with your knowledge of your students in the lead. AI handles the structural calculus.
DEF · CHOICE ARCHITECTURE
The structure of the options offered. The architecture decides what the choosing is teaching, independent of what the student ends up choosing.
REF · UDL
Universal Design for Learning, as written, asks for variability designed into the task itself. The classroom-folklore version of UDL asks for parallel versions of the same task, which is what burns teachers out by November.

Self-Determination Theory locates motivation in autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Autonomy needs structure to function.

BY AUGUST
What you walk into the year with.
You have a choice architecture that runs across the year. You know which moments offer choice in approach, which offer choice in path, which offer no choice and why, and how the pattern of choices across the year is teaching students to read themselves as decision-makers.
You also have an AI that knows your choice pedagogy. Not a generic menu generator. An assistant that knows what kind of agency you are building in your students, what each choice point is meant to teach, and what kinds of architectures fit the texts you teach. The articulation work you did in the workshop becomes context the AI carries every time you sit down to design a choice point.

INSIDE
The design work and what supports it.
You get audio that works through the pedagogy underneath choice, where most choice systems break down, and the reframe the rest of the workshop builds on. A structured prompt set walks you through the design work, with each prompt scaffolding a stage of the system you are building. Walkthroughs show how the pieces come together so you can see the design moves in action. You also build tools along the way that hold the architecture of your design and let you see whether the system is doing the teaching work you designed it to do.
The workshop does not stop at the drop. As you start implementing and questions come up, you send them my way, and I answer them in audio form on a private podcast feed that goes only to workshop buyers. The feed stays in your library alongside the rest of the kit.
Part of the workshop is teaching you to get AI output you actually want to use. That happens by helping your AI understand what you value about choice, including your pedagogy, your standards, and the way you think about this practice. The AI then functions as a specialized assistant for this work rather than a generic one. The same articulation work transfers to any other practice you want to train AI for after this workshop.

WHO IT IS FOR
This workshop was built for and by English teachers. The choice design assumes the work students do involves reading and writing about literature, that the choices you offer them are about how they read and what they make of what they read, and that the agency you are building is the agency to be a reader.
A serious second-year English teacher belongs here. A veteran biology teacher does not.
