THE CURRENT

What feedback usually does to your week.

Grading season hits and you spend an evening on a stack of papers, writing comments that explain what the student should have done, what is missing, what to consider next time. The comments are thoughtful. You hand the papers back. Within a week, the next batch shows the same patterns.

Feedback comments arriving after the writing decision has already been made don't have anywhere to land. Students read the grade, scan the comments, file the paper. Whatever you said about voice or evidence or structure stays in your handwriting in their margins.

The work this workshop addresses is designing the system that surrounds your feedback so the comments have somewhere to do their work.

THE REFRAME

Feedback as the instrument students read themselves with.

When feedback works, it teaches students to read their own writing the way you read it. The deliverable is the metacognitive instrument you hand the student, a lens they can use to see their own work for the rest of the year. The comments matter. What matters more is the system the comments are part of.

The shift this workshop builds around is feedback as reading instrument. The teacher's pedagogy is what calibrates the instrument. The pedagogy decides what is worth marking, what the marking is teaching, and how the system around the marking reinforces the lesson across the year.

That shift also reframes what AI can usefully do. AI generates fluent commentary fast, which is the wrong superpower. The output reads well at a glance, with clean syntax, plausible vocabulary, and recognizable English-teacher cadence. What it doesn't carry is your pedagogy. Hand that output to a student and you have outsourced the part that was supposed to be teaching. What AI can do instead is sit underneath your design work, holding your articulated philosophy and applying it consistently across decisions you would otherwise make piecemeal across nine months.

What you walk into the year with.

You have a feedback architecture you designed yourself. You know which writing moments get which kind of attention across the year, what kind of rubric work happens where, and how the feedback system is meant to teach students to read their own writing.

You also have an AI that knows your feedback pedagogy. Not a generic assistant guessing at what you want. An assistant trained on what you value, the way you read student writing, and the standards you hold the work to. The articulation work you did in the workshop becomes context the AI carries into every conversation about feedback from then on.

INSIDE

The design work and what supports it.

You get audio that works through the pedagogy underneath feedback, where most feedback systems break down, and the reframe the rest of the workshop builds on. A structured prompt set walks you through the design work, with each prompt scaffolding a stage of the system you are building. Walkthroughs show how the pieces come together so you can see the design moves in action. You also build tools along the way that triage which student work needs which kind of attention and standardize how a rubric gets applied across a class.

Part of the workshop is teaching you to get AI output you actually want to use. That happens by helping your AI understand what you value about feedback, including your pedagogy, your standards, and the way you read student writing. The AI then functions as a specialized assistant for this work rather than a generic one. The same articulation work transfers to any other practice you want to train AI for after this workshop.

You will work across Gemini, NotebookLM, and Claude or ChatGPT, with a curated research base underneath the design work.

The feedback design assumes you teach writing as part of your subject, that the writing your students do involves close reading and evidence-based argument, and that the rubric work in your classroom carries assumptions a math teacher's wouldn't.

A serious second-year English teacher belongs here. A veteran biology teacher does not.
